I don't use duct tape on my skates

But I totally am okay with you if you use duct tape. I prefer to polish my boots and use a toe guard for protection. For me, I do it mostly because I am cheap. It takes me less money to buy a tin of boot black and a brush than it does two rolls of duct tape. The toe guard cost $9.99 the day I bought my skates, and because I polish that too, I am using it for a second year (and probably more) so, to keep my skates clean, buffed and polished, it has cost me three rolls of duct tape total. I can live with that. Some might say that it takes a long time to polish. Not really. a quick swipe on the toe, heel and front sides after practice and a buff later that night? Maybe 5 minutes. Probably about the same amount of time it takes to ask "Does anyone have any duct tape" at practice, go get the tape, tear it off and place on skates. I recently helped out a friend from my team who has been busy working by washing her wheels, cleaning and lubing her bearings, removing all the duct tape (and goo), leather conditioning and polishing her skates. I now know exactly why I have never added a single piece of duct tape to my toes, but if you do use tape, take it off after practice and add tape only right before you skate. By doing so, you will avoid much leftover tape glue, but - how much will you be spending in tape???

The Great News

Surprise! Boots delivered to the doorstep!
Felt just like I was opening a birthday present as I pulled each skate out of it's plastic wrapping.

Hey ladies and gents! Got my skates back today from Riedell and they look sweet with their new soles and reinforced toe boxes.

The Not So Great News

I hurt myself in practice last night, not sure when I will be back in my skates and rolling around. Making sure to REST, ICE, COMPRESS, ELEVATE (R.I.C.E) and I am also using Arnica and taking ibuprofen.

It's so great to have them back on my feet, even if I am icing and elevating my knee.

Rode my Radar Tuners (orange, 95A) last night on the slick wooden floor, and they sure are FAST! Much faster than when I rode them outside on the cement track. First time using them to scrimmage, and boy can I tell the difference. Harder to control (for now, I will get used to them) but was very impressed with my speed, oh boy was I ever.

Went ahead and ordered a new set of wheels and my replacement knee pads (after my accident, no excuses for new pads). I will be trying out the Atom Snaps (became available this January). My plan has always been to have one set of fast wheels and one universal multi-surface. These SNAPS are a 91A and are the same wheel as the Atom Poisons but with more roll to them. I ended up finding a set of eight wheels for $46 online (most places list them as more $ so shop around) and ordered them in lime green.

What my skates looked like when they came back with their new soles. My Riedell She Devil boot looks better than I could have ever imagined.

Today I cleaned my trucks and pivot cups, switched out my powerdyne stock cushions, and added my medium hardness PowerDyne Magic Cushions. Skates should be pimped up soon!

Made a short video (super, super short) just to keep up with my skating and taping and editing fixation that is going strong. I started using the GoPro in December when I realized...

"Hey, it's cold, but not snowing - SKATE!".

As the days of December have rolled into January, I am still more than happy that I can lace up my kicks and enjoy this wonderful (unusually odd for the area) weather. Yesterday I got to skate with four other girls that came to work on their roller skating (minimum skills) for roller derby. I shot more footage than just what I did for this video, but I think I will save all of the shots and use them in a little while when I have more examples to pull from (and camera angles). The boyfriend mentioned getting a better editing software program (using the iMovie on the MacBook right now), that would be rad (I haven't even figured this one out yet!).

Any way, I sure do hope every one in an unseasonable area is using this wonderful weather to their advantage. Coach Pauly once told us in one of his clinics "If your more experienced girls aren't mentoring your new girls, your team is loosing out".

Newbies

Our Newbies this year are so lucky, if they only knew!

The snow (which in 1982 dumped ten feet in two days in the beginning of January) is still not here. The streets are clear, the temperature crisp and the skate park is beckoning my name. Yesterday, I met up with a transfer derby girl whom I adore (Ms. Bah Bah Bruiser) and also a newbie (name yet to be determined) and worked on skills that the newbies will need to pass for their minimum skills. Of course, I videoed and tried to get as much newbie worthy footage as possible. Tomorrow, I am asking all girlies who want to work on their minimum skills to meet at the track at noon. The more they get to practice, the sooner they can start to scrimmage, and, in my opinion, that is where the real learning takes place. I can't wait to see all the new skaters plow stopping with noise!

Guest Blogers Needed!

Idaho. I was leaving you, moving back to a place I had been before, but needed direction and friends and something more than just some boxes to unpack in the cold of October 2010. I was sitting in the salon chair, getting my hairs cut for the last time from my stylist, listening to sappy music with tears in my eyes. I told her that day between hugs and sobs, that when I got to where I was going, I was joining a roller derby team. And that is exactly what I did.

I moved at the end of October, and by November, I was skating outside under the trees free skating. By December, we had a spot to practice once a week, then January, twice a week. Come summer, we were skating three days a week PLUS the newbie skates that I went to practice and help the even newer girls than me. It is now October, 2011. Besides learning to skate, I started this blog, Muttpuppy's Putting On My Big Girl Panties (a panty in derby is a helmet cover that either has a star or a stripe, hence the title of my blog, Muttpuppy's Putting On My Big Girl Panties).

I've had a great year in derby, meeting wonderful people and traveling to different places. I blog and skate under two different names, so you won't find Muttpuppy listed at Two Evils roller girl master roster. If my career ended today, I would feel satisfied (bench coached two awesome games, our first away and our last home bout), was co-captain of two bouts, captain of one bout, awarded MVP/MOST FEARED/PENALTY BOX PRINCESS, and met the women in derby who I admire the most (though she will admit she's not perfect, makes her even better)).

So, as we know from my last post, October is NATIONAL ROLLER SKATING MONTH, and this blog has a main theme about skating. I will try my hardest to continue on with that theme, but....and this is the kicker....I am asking YOU the reader, to contribute to this months blog post(s), and I am not asking that any of it be skating related. You don't even have to use your real name (hidden behind a mask, you can let your inner (fill in the blanks) out).

Some of my interest are treasure hunting, metal detecting, coin collecting, antiquing, painting, crafting, swimming, exercising, cleaning (oh wait), taking care of my kitties and little foster dog and my female goldfish (who for some reason didn't spawn this year, weird). Hodgepodge. And What Nots. I enjoy LOTS of things, do you?

Some people, just like turtles. That's cool too. Wanna tell me about it?

Just Another Saturday In The Park

Survived my teams very first ever double header at our home track this Saturday. Was beautiful weather for an outdoor bout, my family flew in from Michigan to watch, and I was awarded Most Feared.

What else?

Oh, yes, it was the first time I was captain of my team (previously, I have been co-captain) and also my 2nd time bench coaching. The team I bench coached rolled into victory with a win of 249-3 points. What a day. Someone posted on facebook that our team should have put in blockers instead of jammers to jam since it was such a slaughter, whomever commented that....here are my thoughts on that topic.

• This is derby, we don't play any less than 100% (Click HERE and follow the link to Blockodile Dundee's post about giving 100%, it's a very inspiring read)

• Being a team predominately full of very athletic skiers/snowboarders/hikers/rock climbers, we train for endurance, speed, and agility specifically since size is not on our side and that being said, EVERY one of the girls on our team can and will jam if asked. In fact, we jammed all but three of our fourteen girl lineup.

• You don't get better if people take mercy on you cause you are less experienced. I have yet to see another team bow down to an opposing team because they are behind in points. Click HERE to read about mismatch etiquette.

That being said, all the girls who skated did an amazing job! I always look forward to skating against and meeting other people/teams, why else do I practice so many hours a week?

The two evils of derby

...Football....How many backs have the name "Johnson" written on them?

If my last name where Johnson, and so was an opponent on the other team, would it matter? No, it would not because it actually happens quite often. What about in roller derby? Have you ever seen two girls with the same name (or something similar)? Probably not, due to the fact that there is a registry for roller derby girls that approves or denies names based upon similarity to a name or names that have been previously registered.

I have a derby name, and it was hard to decide on it because every time I came up with a name I felt comfortable with, I would check the registry and see that someone already had that name, so I would start again trying to find a special name that fit me. I like having a derby name and introducing myself with an extended hand in a hearty shake while smiling these words from my mouth "Hi, I am...", BUT, I also agree with Engel, blogger for Sprechen Sie Derby.

My week in a nutshell (help! I'm trapped in a nutshell)

Let's see. Sunday night I washed my pads. Monday morning, my man bought me new ceramic bearings. Monday afternoon, I posted on facebook "something wonderful is afoot, I can feel it!" Monday night I polished my skates, washed and rotated my wheels and put in my sick new bearings (thanks hun). Tuesday morning at work, I miss a call. I text back - asking coach "you rang?". Coach calls back, with the news. I AM BOUTING CHICO THIS SATURDAY!!!!!!! Top 14 players for this bout has my name on it! I am beyond excited. I think I will get nervous, but for now, I am just so excited to go hit some ladies I can't even tell you how much. I never would have come this far so fast if it hadn't been for all the great ladies that I skate with, my captain and co-captain, my coach, and of course, me! Derby practice is such a great outlet, now lets see if bouting is too! Wish me luck on Saturday!

Sporting the derby toe

So, ahem, is anyone else sporting a "derby toe" in their derby skinz?! One of my teammates brought it to our attention the other day (just in time) for individual photo shoots in the new skinz. I laughed so hard, but was promised that the fishnets underneath would even things out down there. Wow. I must be buying the wrong type of nets, I have never found a pair that filled the crack! If anyone else has a photo they want to share of the "derby toe" by all means, be my guest!
