The Great News

Surprise! Boots delivered to the doorstep!
Felt just like I was opening a birthday present as I pulled each skate out of it's plastic wrapping.

Hey ladies and gents! Got my skates back today from Riedell and they look sweet with their new soles and reinforced toe boxes.

The Not So Great News

I hurt myself in practice last night, not sure when I will be back in my skates and rolling around. Making sure to REST, ICE, COMPRESS, ELEVATE (R.I.C.E) and I am also using Arnica and taking ibuprofen.

It's so great to have them back on my feet, even if I am icing and elevating my knee.

Rode my Radar Tuners (orange, 95A) last night on the slick wooden floor, and they sure are FAST! Much faster than when I rode them outside on the cement track. First time using them to scrimmage, and boy can I tell the difference. Harder to control (for now, I will get used to them) but was very impressed with my speed, oh boy was I ever.

Went ahead and ordered a new set of wheels and my replacement knee pads (after my accident, no excuses for new pads). I will be trying out the Atom Snaps (became available this January). My plan has always been to have one set of fast wheels and one universal multi-surface. These SNAPS are a 91A and are the same wheel as the Atom Poisons but with more roll to them. I ended up finding a set of eight wheels for $46 online (most places list them as more $ so shop around) and ordered them in lime green.

What my skates looked like when they came back with their new soles. My Riedell She Devil boot looks better than I could have ever imagined.

Today I cleaned my trucks and pivot cups, switched out my powerdyne stock cushions, and added my medium hardness PowerDyne Magic Cushions. Skates should be pimped up soon!

Money Well Spent

I am not so sure if money has been as big of an issue for others as it has for me this past year, so placing this order from Wicked Skatewear has been a long time coming! My derby dream list is much longer than my placed order, and much more exciting, but alas, I will have some new digs!

My skate boots (She Devils) should be back sometime in the first week of January (derby skating starts back up January 3). I will probably (unless a work of God happens) be skating on my borrowed skates the first week.

So, what was on my derby order?

Would love to have had the money for new knee pads too, but that will have to be later in the season (before bouting starts). Gaskets really only last me around six months, but I highly recommend them to every skater.

I will post pictures of my skates with their new soles and reinforced toe box (thanks Riedell!) with their updated bushing, wheels and nuts when I get them!

Carpet FIber

Who blogs about carpet fiber?

As those who have been following along here on Putting On My Big Girl Panties, you know that I finally got my go fast derby skates (Riedell She Devils, Radar Wheels). What you might not know, is that I lace them up on average, of every single day. I enjoy doing many leg strengthening exercises while wearing them (for additional weight and also to "become one with the skate") while watching television and performing general house chores. My concern? Carpet fibers, since the whole house is covered in rust colored carpet. I am noticing that my skates are becoming very sluggish while at derby practice, so, I will be attempting to perform my very first knock down, drag out, wheel inspection and cleaning adventure in the near future. I can only imagine how many fibers have made their way into my bearings (not to mention the dust and cat hair). I am past due on rotating my wheels anyway, so it just makes sense to do it all at once. My very first scrimmage is at the end of this month, so I need to get it done and get some speed a.s.a.p. While at derby clinic, I watched a short cleaning 101 session, so I feel as though I understand what bits and pieces I need to have on hand, but doing it myself for the first time might be interesting. TIP OF THE DAY - HOW TO KEEP YOUR BOOT LEATHER STRONG (NO DUCT TAPE REQUIRED).

For those ladies out there who wonder what color of duct tape to put on the toes of your skates, and all the gals wondering "should I get a toe cup or toe strap", here is a helpful piece of information. Wear and tear of boots develops when there is friction (boot leather/floor). To prevent this, there needs to be a barrier between the leather and the floor. Grab an old rag, a tin of black Kiwi shoe polish and a buffing brush. By applying a layer of polish on the boot and brushing it to a shine, you have now added a barrier that not only protects from friction (floor/polish, no longer floor/leather) but also makes your skates shine. For ladies with white skates, you will need white polish followed by clear. Ladies with black skates and white stripes, put a layer of petrolatum jelly on the white areas before using the black polish. A quick wipe to remove the petroleum jelly, and you are now primed to apply the white to the stripes (tip - use a cotton swab).
