Will War Paint Make ME Tougher?

Tonight is our team scrimmage to help raise money for a community member who is suffering from cancer. This will be the first time I get to skate in front of a crowd. Obviously, I am very very very excited. The question was asked to me by a teammate, if I was going to paint my face for it. Paint my face? The thought had not crossed my mind up until that point. Paint my face. I thought abut it some more and then went right into what I always do, I googled it. War Paint, Face Paint, Roller Derby Face Paint....you name it, I googled it. There are lots of girls out their looking like scary dolls...not sure if that is for me. I am thinking more acid tripper than demon child (IF I were to actually paint it up). The longer this day goes, and the closer it is time to bout, I might just end up completely unidentifiable. I love getting into a character and dressing up, heck, I have a costume bag big as my bed. I have bottles of unopened face paints, adhesive and body scars (all from sales right after Halloween). I have a feeling this could get interesting. Maybe I am that "girl that paints her face for derby" and just didn't know it? The thought had never crossed my mind until last night, now my wheels are turning. It helped looking at this face book page ROLLERGIRLS WHO WEAR FACEPAINT . I will keep you posted on my decision, and of course, I will post a photo IF I end up going for it. It is a fundraiser after all (hence the word FUN).

Bushing Oh My

Remember the (ghetto) sonic cruisers I used to ride? Well, I tore them all apart. It was great to use them as a training tool. I highly recommend using a training pair if you have never done the tear down (put back together) and have a pair of skates you are needing to have for practice anytime soon. Once I pulled out the bearings, I realized that not only were they full of hair and grossness, but they also were ABEC 1! I forwent putting the bearings back together, and ordered a new set of bearings in my last Wicked order. Since these are my outdoor skates (road skates mostly) I chose to not spend too much money on bearings (though I would have preferred ABEC 7 or 9) and got the ABEC number 5s for these. I think they will be alright. Haven't been able to skate outdoors lately. The snow has not stopped in days. The many feet of white and wind keep us shoveling. School was closed today. I sure hope that our scrimmage tomorrow isn't canceled again. Originally, the scrimmage was supposed to be February 25th, March 25th is the reschedule date. Fingers crossed we get to skate! Our skate days at the gym have been being changed and/or canceled, and the girls are just itching to hit each other.

Sporting the derby toe

So, ahem, is anyone else sporting a "derby toe" in their derby skinz?! One of my teammates brought it to our attention the other day (just in time) for individual photo shoots in the new skinz. I laughed so hard, but was promised that the fishnets underneath would even things out down there. Wow. I must be buying the wrong type of nets, I have never found a pair that filled the crack! If anyone else has a photo they want to share of the "derby toe" by all means, be my guest!

Broken?

...I think it is time to get some insurance. The "what ifs" become so much more apparent when girls are getting injured left and right in the sport of roller derby! Now, the task at hand is to find the best insurance fit, that fits into my budget as well. I haven't had any medical insurance in over two years, and at that time I paid for it through my work (also had accident insurance). I think I have forgotten what it is like to pay for insurance! I don't have much money, but I definitely don't have enough to pay for even one trip to the doctor (let alone a full on injury)! If anyone out there has any info on the (boring) topic of insurance, hit me back!

Is Muttpuppy your derby name?

Nope! It is not. I pondered using Muttpuppy as my derby name, but thought better of it. Muttpuppy is something I have referred to myself for many, many, many years. It was actually my very first email account. I am an advocate for animals, love and respect them. I believe in controlled pet populations and selective breeding to keep breed standards alive. I donate money to shelters and help my fellow neighbors animals in times of need. Muttpuppy fits me to a tee, even though I currently only own cats. My last dog was dropped off at 5 weeks old. She was a black lab beagle cross that had kidney disease. I have not owned a dog since. I grew up breeding Holland Lop rabbits and Arabian horses. I have fostered and loved many a four legged beast!

ALMS for the poor

Roller Derby Teams pay taxes to the government, rink fees, bout bills, hotel fees, gas fees etc. The teams raise money through fundraisers, donations and dues from each skater. It is hard for leagues to grow when they don't have enough money to cover costs. Remember to donate money to your local teams through purchasing merchandise, attending bouts, sponsoring teams, and donating money. I am a firm believer that if you make your morning cup of coffee at home, you have saved at least $3.00 that day to be put to good use. One dollar from you, another from another, next thing you know, your local team has a floor to skate on! I am linking below a team that could use even $1 to help them. Roller Derby is not just for the ladies...

For every significant other who lost their gal to the world of fishnets and skates, GET OVER IT! It isn't just the girls getting involved. The men are joining in just as hard, spending just as much (if not more time) as coaches, refs and non-skating officials (NSOs). Time spent skating, going to meetings, hosting team get togethers, traveling to bouts and general conditioning leaves little time for the loved one sitting at home wondering how something could consume their partner so much. Don't hate, appreciate. If you can't change them (which you won't), JOIN THEM! As stated, derby isn't just for the ladies. So, ladies and gents, get involved with your local roller derby team, or just go and support your partner by watching the last 1/2 of practice once in a while. Go have a drink with the team for a players birthday. Support your friend/lover in what they are doing, because derby is good on so many levels. Don't be left behind when the derby monster gets it's claws 100% into your lady/gent, get involved and fall in love with something you never knew you needed.

Wedding

Tonight, we boarded a party bus and went to TOWN drinking cocktails and hitting up clubs all around. The girls are still out hooping and hollering it up, but I am about to hit the hay. I've got to get up and get packed, clean out my car, and get my car-poolers loaded for a ride to our derby bout! I am so excited - go girls! This weekend is full of firsts for me, and I am very excited!

1. My team is traveling for its first bout of the season
2. It will be my first LIVE derby bout
3. My first time being a non-skating official (NSO) - as a penalty tracker

A Penalty Trackers JOB:

• Record Penalties from both refs and whiteboards
• Tell refs when skaters will serve penalty time or have fouled out
• Tell whiteboard attendant to display penalties to the benches

I have posted a list of the hand signals that I will be looking for this Saturday. These signals are used by the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Take a look and learn some of them for the next time that you watch derby live!

Find something that no one is doing, and DO IT (muttpuppy's business philosophy)

Like so many other Americans, I found myself laid off and on unemployment a few years ago. Instead of allowing myself a perpetual pity party, I did something about it. I bought a website domain and built a website. I applied for an employer identification number and retail sales permit, and started a business. I surprised everyone when I told them that I was a business owner. My business was so unique, that I had to explain it over and over again, spreading the word not only of my business, but what it was I was actually doing. I had found my niche in a market that virtually had no competition. I thought about my business day and night, learned every aspect I could, all the pluses and minuses that could come at me from every angle. My business became all consuming as I constantly tried to offer the very best of everything. I started down the path of social networking (facebook, twitter, merchant circle), linking everything together and sending it to notify my new blackberry. Starting the business was easy, running it, a bit harder! One person to play the role of owner, operator, accountant, lawyer, web designer, marketing department, receptionist, promotions, sales, photographer, customer relations, electronic media specialist, ordering, shipping/receiving... was it worth it? Of course. Does it pay the bills? Not yet. Am I building life skills? Heck yes! Do I recommend others to follow their ideas and pursue the question "What if I did that?" By all means! What is the worst possible scenario? It doesn't work out, so you try again a different way or with a different idea. I am currently in the process of moving my business to a new state (I moved in the fall). It is a much harder (LONGER) process starting a business in my new state, especially since my business deals in something that is not offered in the new location I am currently living. The population is much greater than my former location so I am anticipating having much more work in all areas of the business than before. Today I received a new follower on my business twitter and checked the link to her website. I was very pleased with what I read in the "about" section of her site. I direct messaged the account, asking if I might share her words with my readers, and she said yes.

Plumeuphoria became an overnight idea that I came up with after purchasing my first set of feathers. I instantly fell in love with the idea of "feather hair extensions".

After several weeks of research, I realized that there weren't any "feather hair extension" providers in Central Florida. I saw this as an opportunity to introduce this fairly new and growing trend to my area. As a full-time college student majoring in International Affairs (who knew nothing about owning her own business) I decided to take the risk and give it a try.

On February 2011, Plumeuphoria was established as a small home business that became public through the popular site, Etsy. After opening my shop, I received my first order the next day. I was amazed of how popular the feather hair extensions really were. Ever since, we have made rapid progress and our customers are very happy with the quality of our affordable hair extensions.

Although Plumeuphoria is a new business, I hope to expand it internationally. In the meantime, my goal is to provide affordable hair extensions to the public as well as introducing new hairstyles that incorporate the feather look. Another Sunday

...came and went. Derby practice kicked my butt. Having an active job for a living makes it hard when you can barely bend down to pick something up. Oh my goodness! Monday work was hard, Tuesday work will be harder. Practice tonight, oh my aching legs. Not sure if it was the hard core workout we do before practice, the major blow to my body jamming with our huge refs and girls, or a combo of the two? lol Wish me luck!
