Backwards

And I thought keeping up with the girls in a circle was hard, try playing soccer on skates. Close your eyes, and picture a yellow ball. Picture that ball on the middle of a gymnasium. Now, add a girl on either side of the ball, starring each other down, primed and ready for push off at the bleat of a whistle. Look past those women, at the opposing groups of ladies bent forward at the hips, arms in position to pump left or right, eyes squinting, ready to track the path the ball takes. The whistle blows, and they race around, pushing, shoving, falling all around! Soccer, on skates. Imagine it. Now, imagine it skating backwards only. Kicking the ball, backwards only. Picture it, for I never had until last Tuesday. I was sore for two days straight (though I am out of shape). Can't believe what I've gotten myself into.

Walking On the.....

Tonight was the lunar eclipse, and I missed it. I wanted to see it so badly. Like most places in the United States, it was clouded, so viewing was impossible. I was streaming it live from the web, and found the best footage was coming from Chili. My efforts were in vain though for I woke up on the sofa to a blank computer screen, Married with Children on the television, and my fat cat trying to open my window shades. Dang poor planning on my part by falling asleep without setting the alarm on my smart phone. All in all, I was most disappointed when I opened the shades for my persistent feline only to find a beautiful and bright moon staring back at me. I had missed the transition of sun and moon tonight, and am now very jealous of all that witnessed it!

Home Video - technically can be broken into two categories.

1. Recording of an event, time, place, person
2. Amateur Home Movie attempt. The amateur home movies can be quite good, usually involving a plot while also possibly documenting time, place, person, event, activity, etc. Don't be fooled though, there are some pretty horrible ones out there.

At just over eight minutes long, this home video example can get a little annoying listening to random burst of children's crying. If you close your eyes and just listen though, you will notice that there isn't much talking going on. There are muffled sounds of children playing, bike peddles going in reverse, turns being taken on the monkey bars and the videographer's methodical breathing. I much enjoyed hearing the rotary phone ring, that's something I haven't heard in a long time. For eight whole minutes, I was brought into a family yard, living room and life as a witness only, and guess what? No one was texting, or charging their iPod, or Playing Wii Fit, or watching NetFlix. No one had a Bluetooth on their ear. I find this example almost zen.

Lederhosen Babe

For those that have been following some of my earlier postings

You know that I used to roller skate in the eighties (nineties too, but we'll get to that later). I have mentioned the fact that I am currently trying to join a local roller derby team. It may come to no surprise to anyone paying attention that I love run on sentences and YouTube videos. I have a habit of embedding links directly to a page to help expand on my ideas. I find random bits of information exciting and hope that readers get lost in my thoughts in a similar fashion so we might share some sort of common knowledge. With that being said, I hope that you enjoy some of the example videos that I will be sharing with whomever pushes the play button.

• In Dear Santa there was a prime example of a Mattel toy commercial from 1982 that featured two young girls who later went on to do movie and television. One of the girls, Jenny Lewis, is still performing today as a singer.

After watching this video I feel like going to my local Rite Aid and shopping in roller skates. Really digging the lederhosen look she's rocking with the orange socks. I do however think this woman is invisible to the pharmacist and shoppers. If I saw a women skating into a store, throwing down mad skills on eight wheels while shopping for antiperspirant, I would be looking at her, thinking "Right On! Jealous". Morning Post Over Coffee And Toast

My head is spinning from all the "so bad they are good" 1980's footage available on the internet!

I never know until I watch the footage what it will be like. So far the clips I have seen fall into these categories...

Dear Santa

I am sure that my Christmas list was one word written in crayon.

This is how I remember it now.

Dear Santa,

Have you lost weight?! It is 1983, and all I want for Christmas is a Baby Skates Doll. I don't want or need anything else. Just make sure that I get my very own Baby Skates Doll for Christmas, or I am going to turn up the television and dance like a child hopped up on Faygo Rock & Rye and Halloween candy every time the commercial comes on. Santa, I will run directly to the toy isle every time I am inside of a Toys R Us and stare longingly at the yellow box containing fifteen inches of molded plastic with my eyes glazed over until my point is clearly known. I will dream about her wind up back (no batteries required) and awesome skating capabilities all night long, and then recap that dream all day for my mother and father to listen to until there is absolutely nothing else they can do but get me that little skating freak with the hot pink running shorts and short blond hair to appease me. Unless, Santa, you where to just make sure that I get what I want for Christmas (this isn't a threat, technically).

On Christmas morning, my brother and I tiptoed down the stairs to the decorated blue spruce and gazed upon a mass of green and red boxes with ribbons and bows. We started shaking every box that was for us, giggling and shrieking with excitement, trying to be as quiet as possible while purposely waking our parents and other brother from their slumber. I shook every present until I found the one I knew just had to be my soon to be most cherished doll. The commercial was replaying over and over in my head as I imagined her rolling around the kitchen as we ate our breakfast later. I wasted no time ripping open the paper to find my very own baby skates inside! That exact moment was probably the happiest I had ever been in my short life to that point. In fact, it could have been the most pure moment of happiness that I have felt even up to right now. Soon after, a whole new emotion over came me. I wound up her back, stood her on the floor and watched as she proceeded to fall flat on her face. She fell again, and again, and again, no one had obviously taught her to skate. My whole world crashed down on me. My hopes and dreams crushed. This was the exact moment in my life, I not only realized that you can't believe everything you see, but also, I had put all of my eggs in one basket by only asking for her. I had been so persistent in getting only her, that I never asked for anything else. I had never prepared myself for the possibility that Baby Skates could be a fraud, a metaphor for life. Christmas went from my happiest moment to my worst in a matter or minutes. I tossed aside my molded plastic failure and went back into the living room to watch my brothers open all the rest of their gifts while I sat with a "lost puppy in the cold" downward turned face. Although I was hurt by this experience, it didn't last long. Many Christmases have passed since and I have learned that asking for multiple things means not being disappointed (same with life). I have also learned that I am an adult who has the power to buy things for myself and return what doesn't work! Little bit of Life Lessons 101 people. Life has also taught me something else, and that is to stop making fun of my mother for washing all of my dolls and putting them away in boxes to preserve them. I used to think it so strange that she (or anyone for that matter) would ever want to save such a thing as baby doll. Now, I want to pick up my phone and thank her. Maybe I could ask if she could dig out old Baby Skates and send her to me, simply for nostalgia purposes. Oh, who am I kidding? I just found out she is selling for over $145 on ebay!

Derby Derby Do! - Muttpuppy

In the year 2000 + 1

Let us all take a minute to remember...
"In the year 2000, cars will no longer be required to come with air bags, because, people, will be required to come, with breast implants..."

In 2001, a roller derby league made up of all-females started in Austin, Texas. This original league split in two a few years after inception, and is highlighted in the documentary Hell on Wheels, The Birth Of All-Girl Roller Derby, directed by Bob Ray. The first match was held in 2002 and by 2005 over 50 teams (banked and flat) had been created across the United States. According to the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), there are currently 105 Full Member Leagues and 46 apprentice. As a new skater, I have to learn and follow the rules set forth by WFTDA before I will ever be able to skate in a bout. The amount of injuries that happened in the early 2000's mandated that simple skills such as falling properly where understood by players.

The Number 20

As far as minimum skills for derby, sanctioned by the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, 25 laps in 5 minutes is the number that I need to hit. So, now to condition and add five laps to my time. I wonder if I could hit 25 just by switching to real derby skates? If I can hit 20 in my ghetto Sonic Cruisers shouldn't I be able to hit 25 in a good pair of derby skates?

Correction! Since posting this, I have found out that my information was incorrect. The number of laps is 20 laps in 5 minutes! Success! (1/4/11)

I'm starting a band!!!

If I can talk my reluctant boyfriend into it that is! He's really not so into the whole idea and I am not one hundred percent sure why *wink*. I mean, seriously! Who would not want to join an iPad band? I would join, so other people must want to as well. The biggest plus to this style of band would probably have to be that your instrument case fits into a backpack while also performing tasks beyond that of just making music. Hmm, maybe I can hold practice over Skype?

When I first saw this video, I flashed back to Chime Choir (which yes, I was a member of). Could I, the 11 year old girl, standing before a table full of silver rectangular chimes, ever have fathomed in my wildest of dreams, that a whole band could play complete musical scores on little screens that you touch to manipulate? Technology, I can't believe how far it has come since Mr. H made us listen to the crappiest electronic music during 6th grade Music Appreciate Class.

At the moment, I am a soloist without an instrument, so, if anyone out there would like to donate an iPad to me, I promise I will learn to play it! I smile as I write this. Who am I kidding? No one wants to hear me play bass line by myself.

Art And Derby

I am looking out my window right now at a calm blue, gray, alabaster sky. The view would make a very pretty painting. The sight outside inspires me and reminds me how I had started brainstorming ideas for derby art (specifically a coloring book that could be used as a fundraiser). I found this artist from the UK who does derby illustrations and logos (Cherry8creative). Thought that I might share her site with you. Maybe I should send a picture of me for her to illustrate, what do you think? Anyway, check her out if you get the time. "Rollin" Right Along

The muppet movie has always been one of my all time favorites. Please watch it if

a) you've never even heard/seen it before
b) it's been awhile since you have seen it.

So, "Rollin Right Along", I am going to talk derby, newbie style. I am totally pumped to skate with my new derby family. Last Sunday I drove a total of four hours to RollerKingdom adult skate night from 7:30 - 10:30 in Reno, NV. There were some other gals from the team that showed up, as well as our coach and our referee. Four hours might sound like a long way, and it is, but not when you have skill requirements to meet. I pushed my self a little too hard from the get go, and sweated up a storm. I drank two bottles of water to hydrate but did get sick on the way home from not having enough fuel in my body and being exhausted. Oh wait, do you hear that? It's the worlds smallest violin, playing for me! lol.

Our team has had a hard time finding a place locally to skate this winter (the outdoor track is under snow), but we now have a home at the community center! Tuesday marked my very first pre-season practice with the derby girls (only fell once). For the rest of the month of December, every Tuesday from 8:30 to 10:30 I will be skating laps and doing drills on the gym floor, Boo Ya! My gear is ghetto, but my heart is in it. I dream about new skates at night, but my reality is that I am the only girl rocking sneaker looking "Sonic Cruisers" that aren't made for going fast, while sporting my snowboard helmet, and nighttime mouth guard. I laugh at myself when I look in the mirror, the trick, is to out skate the girls with the real stuff. To be accepted in this sport, you have to prove yourself in the rink, and that is that. How am I going to do it? Conditioning and Endurance Training. Don't laugh when I tell you this, but I have been working out to Billy Blanks Taebo Amped Core Express Video while WEARING skates, using the weighted amplifier bar, AND a ten pound weight vest. Might look and sound funny, but I am getting stronger! After I am done with the 30 minutes with Billy, I skate in the street and leap over cracks. I am also very lucky to have access to a pool, so I have been swimming laps as well to build up my endurance. I might not have new skates yet, but when I do get them, girls better be watching out for me, cause I want to go FAST!

It all started back in the early 1980's at the local skating rink. Two young girls, one red headed and one blond, stepped up to the small cashiers window and handed over their allowance monies. Matching metal skate cases in hand the girls took deep breaths and entered into the noise of teenagers and children on a Saturday in Michigan. It was dark and cool with lights flashing from the DJ booth as the girls found a spot to sit down. They raced to change out of their street shoes then lock them in their skate cases and change into their white lace up boots with red wheels. The girls took one look around the busy area before looking each other in their aqua blue mascara eyes, nodding and heading as fast as they could to the blue skating floor illuminated by the spinning disco ball above. People, lights, music, heaven! What better a place to be on a Saturday? Fast skate. Backwards Skate. Couples Skate. Scooter Skate. Limbo Contest. The Hokey Pokey! The skating rink was the place to be on the weekends, no matter what the weather outside, it was always "cool" inside. Ahh, the 80's.
