Roller Derby Made Me Cry

Bonnie said, if you need a derby break up, take it....come back when you are ready...I am ready...

I cried, hard. It was like a huge break up and not just one person, but a whole team. Blood, sweat, time, money...and then POOF! No more. Like a stab in the gut, a pain that couldn't be mended with anything but time. I took that time, six practices actually, and that is when I lost faith in what I held so dear in my life. Cruelty to those in your own circle. I don't live life being mean to people, some do. Sometimes there are bullies in the world who get off making others feel bad for having tried their hardest. I had thought, if I practiced hard and become the best that I could, that it would HELP my team. Sometimes, others don't want you to get better, because then they themselves feel weak, so they attack. Time. Heals. Everything. I do not fret that I was bullied, or unfairly treated by people of power. I do not.

From the ashes the Phoenix rises...

In the past year, I have (outside of skating and blogging and working on making me a better version of myself with everything that I do) started my business back up, helped others in their businesses and made those outside of my derby circle feel special that they are in my life. I am active in my community outside of a team telling me to be. I pay attention to city government, politics and the very best part, our children. Yes, I am surrounded by children. All summer long I have been lacing up my skates, to turn around and see a small skater with a helmet on backwards, or another with their spider man elbow pads down to their wrists. The best, was a little girl on inline skates asking me to help her do a cross over, only to find her skates were on the wrong feet. Those kids, oh my gosh, they make me smile. Twice a week, we played games and did jam starts, and some nights, I had one attached (literally) to my hip. There were nights I wanted to pull my hair out, but my helmet kept me from physically doing it. I would ask the parents after practice how they stayed sane and they would drop their book and take out their ear buds, look at me with a blank stare and say "huh?". It didn't take me long to realize that when I was stressed and they were out of control with talking and laughing and not paying attention, I would scream "DEADBUG" and they would all drop, immediately, to the ground, twitching and rolling and dying (in silence) until they heard the command to get back up "ALIVE BUG". Oh, that was my saving grace.

Passing on the derby knowledge....

When I first came to derby, the very first month, my coach asked us to give him a goal for that season on a piece of paper. I gave him two. The first, was to become someone that could become a useful and strong player that helped my team. The second, was to someday coach a Jr. Roller Derby Team. I still aspire for both of those goals. In fact, when I was a young adult in Michigan, I went to a fortune teller at a Reggae Festival  She read my palm then asked if I was interested in finding out about marriage and children (apparently, not everyone does, so she asked before continuing). As she flipped my hand to its side, she showed me some lines and said "You will never marry or have biological children of your own, yet, you will be surrounded by children". This summer, I kept hearing her voice in my head, "surrounded by children". As frustrating as they can be, at least I can give them back at night. In my small community, there is no place for these children to skate in the winter, and roller skating is not something that they grow up learning. With the help of other like minded skaters, my goal is to make sure that every young person has a chance at learning to skate, and I especially hope that every girl and boy that wants to try their hand at roller derby should have the opportunity to start off young, because the future of roller derby and how we interact with each other on a team should start before they are adults. My little skaters support and encourage and help each other, and they make sure to pat each other on the backs for all their hard work and practice. Our little skaters will grow up to teach others and be blessed to have strong pods and hard hitting individuals so they can jam through the packs with ease. I look forward to the future, even if I am surrounded by children, hey, there could be worse things in life (like having to wear a wig from pulling out my hair).

Generation OLDER than myself

I pet sit occasionally for money and satisfaction. Each pet and "parent" is different, but none are wrong in their love for their pup(s)/kitties. Some times, I wipe the mouth of a teacup designer dog after it eats and its little bottom after it uses the pad to "poopoo". I understand each owner loves their "baby" and want me to treat it how they would, I get that.

Recently, I pet sat a large dog and older kitty for a widower. I sat with him, listened to his stories of the building the Alaskan Pipe Line, being a fighter pilot in the secret base in Nevada (that was secret up until 20 years ago). I learned all about fiber optic cable and installing it in Texas.

At the above mentioned sitting job, I ended up staying and just listening to him talk (something I know he needed, but I did too). He loved basketball in his high school years and was so good they made him play foot ball (which he was very good at, but preferred to play basketball). As he recalled more memories from his youth, he expressed with excitement in his eyes, how much he loved to roller skate. With hand to foot motions he put on his "imaginary" metal skates with the wooden wheels talking about how his father helped him. He put his imaginary leather necklace over his head and held out before him the key that would have been attached. In his home of small Boulder, Montana there was only one spot that the children could use to skate back and forth, the rest of the area not being paved. I listened to him tell his tale, and then let him know that I too like to roller skate and do it often. He clapped his hands "oh good, we have so much in common".

Our conversation turned to our ladies of roller derby here in this quaint mountain town. I presented him with my "Dime From A Dame" thank you. Dime from a dame is a piece of card stock with a picture of a derby skater, a hot glued Roosevelt dime, a link to our website, and our bout schedule for the 2012 season. I showed him our home bouts, and he stood up quickly saying how much he would enjoy coming to see us play. It was at that moment, I gave him his derby name. "Wooden Wheels". He loved it, and can not wait to watch the derby.

Now, he has a name, and something to look forward to. My girlfriend suggested we put his name on a shirt from her business and present it to him. I think that would be a wonderful idea. I look forward to making his shirt and bringing it to him. He did invite me to stop over whenever I would like for coffee. Good old Wooden Wheels, his love for life makes me happy.

Protection, and why it matters

Because it does. Imagine falling with no knee pads while playing derby, how would that feel? What if you were knocked down and as your head whipped backwards it came in contact with the hard wooden floor and you said to yourself "should have put my helmet on" as you blacked out? More and more ladies are opting to skate in butt pads that cover their hips and tail bones, making hematomas and tailbone pain less severe. The more I skate, the harder I push myself, the more I ask the question; "will I be able to afford the injuries that are common among those who play this sport"? The answer, is no. I have no insurance, I am unemployed. Am I stupid to be putting myself in harms way day after day; practice after practice; bout after bout? Yes. I am. In the last two months, I have seen two ambulances take girls screaming in pain off from rink floors on wooden boards, yelling "DON'T CUT MY SKATE"! I have witnessed two other girls being wheeled out to cars to be taken to the hospital. I have seen one girl calmly rubbing her leg, only later to have pins put in. Five injuries, four broken ankles, three surgeries; in two months. Assessing my situation, pros and cons. I love being on my team, working hard, and getting exercise. I enjoy skating fast and hitting hard just as much as the next girl. What if though, the next girl, hits me just hard enough, and it is me that is being taken away to rack up the medical bills with no way to pay? Are we as a derby community moving our girls along too fast, asking too much too soon without enough experience, training and strength? Are we as teams doing enough to know that newer skaters should practice, practice, practice, before being mingled in with veterans and those who are more fit? I don't know the answer. All I know is that with all the ankle injuries I have witnessed this year, I have some re-assessing to do. I can't afford to get hurt, so I need to figure that out - before my time comes, which I know it will. The "it won't happen to me attitude" that is/was being projected is quickly losing its glitz and glamor.

I am looking into ankle protection, since I can't afford to upgrade to a boot with ankle support. There are many options available, and I am going to be researching them all. Might even get some butt pads too, and heck, maybe even some chest protection. As sports progress, injuries that happen propel equipment needs to change, just look at football gear from the past and now.
As I look to the future of myself and derby, I do not want to stop playing the game and skating fast, hitting hard. No I do not, but, I do need to play smarter; and with that being said, I need to protect myself both on the track and off.

More protection, and health insurance.
Period.
The end.

Walla Walla Roller Derby Wine Bottles

Woman's Roller Derby; Roller Derby Wine made by derby girls in the Pacific Northwest.

I answered my home phone the other day thinking that it would be for my boyfriend, but the voice on the other end said that they wanted to talk to me, little old me. It was a good friend and former roommate that lived with my man and me in BEAUTIFUL wonderful Idaho. He (our former roommate) is now a winemaker in Walla Walla, Washington; the mecca of fabulous wine country. For those of you who think great wine only comes from California, we shall have to have a little chat.

The conversation went a little like this...

 FORMER ROOMMATE/WINEMAKER

"Hey, you love roller derby"

MUTTPUPPY
"Yes, yes I do actually"

 FORMER ROOMMATE/WINEMAKER

"Cool. I have some chicks who are making roller derby themed wine in Walla Walla and want to get it into the hands of derby girls outside of Washington. Can I send you a bunch of the wine to try?"

MUTTPUPPY

"Um, do you even have to ask? I LOVE PACIFIC NORTHWEST WINE and, I love roller derby"

 FORMER ROOMMATE/WINEMAKER

"Cool, Cool. I will let them know and get it in the mail"

MUTTPUPPY

"Can I sweeten the deal and ask for a promo shirt?
It can be handmade if needed. I will wear it to practice."

 FORMER ROOMMATE/WINEMAKER

"You want a shirt?"

MUTTPUPPY

"You don't get it, but the girls will totally.
Yes, tell them to send me a shirt!"

Later that evening via text

 FORMER ROOMMATE/WINEMAKER

"What's your derby name?"

Once I get the wine in the mail I will be doing a wine tasting with my girls at my house and reviewing it here at Muttpuppy's Putting On My Big Girl Panties. I can't wait to try out what these derby girls from north of me are concocting. Follow along as I introduce you to new and exciting wine from derby girls! There is no stopping what a skater can do once her mind is set to achieve it. Happy day to everyone.

Pimp Your Skates

Yo Yo Derby Doers! Bouting season is here and she is making derby widows all across the globe. If not skating, ladies (jr's and guys) are fundraising, traveling, working out, and best of all, PIMPING THEIR SKATES!

"Go Fast Skates" is what I love to call mine, because that is what I want to do, GO FAST! I have been happy blocking since last year when I started derby, but why limit myself to just that? This past weekend I traveled four hours to go scrimmage with a great group of ladies. What a way to spend a Saturday! Apparently, I am a jammer now, something I wasn't expecting. I blame it on my go fast skates (now to work on the go fast no back blocks). I train in high altitude, so the lower elevation may have been to my advantage...but it could also be the fact that I am slowly (as money allows) pimping my skates.

If you have been following along here at Muttpuppy's Putting On My Big Girl Panties, then you already know that I have changed out my bushings from the stock PowerDyne that came with my Riedell She Devils and switched up my stock red tuner wheels to orange 95A wheels for wooden floor, and the 91A Atom Snaps for slippy surfaces.

My coach likes to think that I am getting faster because I practice all the time (road, outdoor track) and exercise, but I tell him it's cause of my pimped up kicks. I did lots of research on what I wanted to do in my skating (push myself to excel beyond my current skill level) and what kinds of skate modifications would help me to achieve my goals. It did not cost me very much money (if you follow along, you will know that I am thrifty).

So, if you have aspirations of grandeur that require more than just hard work and dedication, switch up your style and pimp your kicks! Lighter plates, faster wheels, new bushings, ceramic bearings, and lighter nuts will help. Do some research, set your price points and start pimping your skates!

I got a brand new pair of roller skates

"I love roller derby. I love everything about it. I look forward to the future of roller derby. I love that other people love roller derby.

Muttpuppy

It is very nice to see all the videos that are coming about because of roller derby. The one I will share with you today was shown to me by a friend of mine, Mad Maggie. I very much enjoy this video. It was made by a girl in high school for her senior thesis. We have a girl on our team who is a senior in high school, and roller derby is her senior project. I sent her this video. I wish her well as she enters into the world or roller derby. Makes me happy for her. My wish is that women in the future are able to play roller derby as young as possible, as a sport in the schools and colleges. Will this happen? We will just have to watch and see. I once asked Bonnie D.Stroir if she knew of roller derby in the schools and she said there is one elementary school that does have it as a sport - what a great step towards that wish!

Oh man, this is all going to my head

Two month challenge is among us.

Two months of eating healthy and working out to burn calories and build muscle is upon us! I have been using the time I was skating before it snowed to stay active indoors.

I am working on the total body - lean fast agile self (and a great looking booty would not hurt my feelings one bit). If you don't care to watch me stand on my head every day, that's fine, I TOTALLY understand. I have found that one way for me to stay focused and complete a task (like getting fit) is to document the process. I am posting my headstand videos to my YouTube site, trying to stay up as long as I can.

If anyone would like to join in, you are more than welcome to share your thoughts, videos and pictures here or at the YouTube site. Don't be shy, our soon to be rocking bodies will be proof of the hard work we put into the universe.

Happy Skating!

Doesn't matter which way you look at it...

...it snowed last night. No matter how many times I said out loud "I don't believe in snow" and heard the retort that I must want to move to Hawaii (hey, a nice long visit, but I can think of other places too). 32 winters, and no endless summer. I was getting accustom to this unusual endless fall though I just really wanted one nice long break from snow plowing the driveway so I could go snowplow* some pavement.

 * snowplow is also a way to slow down by making a V with your legs. Used in skating and skiing.

Living in the mountains though, I am aware of the fact that water makes snow and snow melts into water and we need the water, and skiers have to ski to make money, to stimulate the economy to create jobs, yadda yadda yadda. I do understand, but you can't blame a girl for trying.

I don't use duct tape on my skates

But I totally am okay with you if you use duct tape. I prefer to polish my boots and use a toe guard for protection. For me, I do it mostly because I am cheap. It takes me less money to buy a tin of boot black and a brush than it does two rolls of duct tape. The toe guard cost $9.99 the day I bought my skates, and because I polish that too, I am using it for a second year (and probably more) so, to keep my skates clean, buffed and polished, it has cost me three rolls of duct tape total. I can live with that. Some might say that it takes a long time to polish. Not really. a quick swipe on the toe, heel and front sides after practice and a buff later that night? Maybe 5 minutes. Probably about the same amount of time it takes to ask "Does anyone have any duct tape" at practice, go get the tape, tear it off and place on skates. I recently helped out a friend from my team who has been busy working by washing her wheels, cleaning and lubing her bearings, removing all the duct tape (and goo), leather conditioning and polishing her skates. I now know exactly why I have never added a single piece of duct tape to my toes, but if you do use tape, take it off after practice and add tape only right before you skate. By doing so, you will avoid much leftover tape glue, but - how much will you be spending in tape???

When Zen Moments Go South

I am not the owner of this image, but I wish I was.

Falling up-side down out of an inversion table. Deep in a peaceful thought that will never be completed. The feeling of release as the ankle ball lets go of its housing and the feet pause then slip as fast as the neck hits the ground, the lower back lands upon the metal bar on the floor as the board slaps upwards making a resounding smacking noise. "Are you OK?" comes from the 1st floor as you lay in pain and think to yourself, "I don't know, am I OK?"

Bushings Replaced

The Great News

Surprise! Boots delivered to the doorstep!
Felt just like I was opening a birthday present as I pulled each skate out of it's plastic wrapping.

Hey ladies and gents! Got my skates back today from Riedell and they look sweet with their new soles and reinforced toe boxes.

The Not So Great News

I hurt myself in practice last night, not sure when I will be back in my skates and rolling around. Making sure to REST, ICE, COMPRESS, ELEVATE (R.I.C.E) and I am also using Arnica and taking ibuprofen.

It's so great to have them back on my feet, even if I am icing and elevating my knee.
Rode my Radar Tuners (orange, 95A) last night on the slick wooden floor, and they sure are FAST! Much faster than when I rode them outside on the cement track. First time using them to scrimmage, and boy can I tell the difference. Harder to control (for now, I will get used to them) but was very impressed with my speed, oh boy was I ever.

This is what my boot looked like prior to sending it in to Riedell for inspection. Notice the curving on the sole of the boot

Went ahead and ordered a new set of wheels and my replacement knee pads (after my accident, no excuses for new pads). I will be trying out the Atom Snaps (became available this January). My plan has always been to have one set of fast wheels and one universal multi-surface. These SNAPS are a 91A and are the same wheel as the Atom Poisons but with more roll to them. I ended up finding a set of eight wheels for $46 online (most places list them as more $ so shop around) and ordered them in lime green.

What my skates looked like when they came back with their new soles. My Riedell She Devil boot looks better than I could have ever imagined.

Today I cleaned my trucks and pivot cups, switched out my powerdyne stock cushions, and added my medium hardness PowerDyne Magic Cushions. Skates should be pimped up soon!

Now - to heal up my knee!Happy Skating and Happy Blogging.
