Fancy Footwork

Gene Kelly, if you can do it, I sure will try too. The body control, quick footed steps and graceful stops would help a derby skater tremendously. Watch the video below to see just how talented this man was.

Just Another Saturday In The Park

Survived my teams very first ever double header at our home track this Saturday. Was beautiful weather for an outdoor bout, my family flew in from Michigan to watch, and I was awarded Most Feared.

What else?

Oh, yes, it was the first time I was captain of my team (previously, I have been co-captain) and also my 2nd time bench coaching. The team I bench coached rolled into victory with a win of 249-3 points. What a day. Someone posted on facebook that our team should have put in blockers instead of jammers to jam since it was such a slaughter, whomever commented that....here are my thoughts on that topic.

  • This is derby, we don't play any less than 100% (Click HERE and follow the link to Blockodile Dundee's post about giving 100%, it's a very inspiring read)

  • Being a team predominately full of very athletic skiers/snowboarders/hikers/rock climbers, we train for endurance, speed, and agility specifically since size is not on our side and that being said, EVERY one of the girls on our team can and will jam if asked. In fact, we jammed all but three of our fourteen girl lineup.

  • You don't get better if people take mercy on you cause you are less experienced. I have yet to see another team bow down to an opposing team because they are behind in points. Click HERE to read about mismatch etiquette.

That being said, all the girls who skated did an amazing job! I always look forward to skating against and meeting other people/teams, why else do I practice so many hours a week?
DUH! TO PLAY DERBY!!!!!!!!

"Love to everyone who straps on skates. I have been learning so much this year, much success and enjoyment to every single person reading this!"

Roller Blade

So, I am sharing this rollerblade video for two different reasons, the first reason being that, duh, it's Kids In The Hall, and the 2nd being that I had a recent experience on roller blades. So, the other day, some girls from derby held a garage sale to try and raise a few extra bucks for our derby team by selling stuff our girls donated. One player donated a pair of Salomon roller blades in my size, so I put them on. Let's just say I quickly realized to stick to quad skating and let someone else roll the in lines. Ouch, it didn't feel good.

A win is a win is a win....

...unless it is a loss.

When a derby team looses a derby bout, the goal is then pushed to "winning the after party". The winner is usually the team with the most girls of their color still standing as the bar lights turn on and the music stops. Drink in hand, a cold walk to a hotel usually follows as the "winners" stumble home in fishnets, face makeup and skate shoes. Sometimes, a pool is infiltrated after hours to the amusement (actually, lack of amusement) of the front desk/security/police department. In any case, someone in video land taped an after party win and posted it to youtube, where I could post it for those who have never won an after party, to see.

Youtube # 4

I don't have a lot of my videos in my computer for some reason, but used what little old footage I had. Just installed the new iMovie, so this is my first attempt with the updated version (but fourth youtube upload). Take a look!

Made another one!

Took a break from technology...

...and it was soooooooooo nice!

Only used the computer when I really needed to google some info, then shut the top to it and put it aside. I got tons of stuff done (go me).

While on hiatus I:

Sanded (by hand) and stained my ash dresser a beautiful cherry color, started on the matching end tables, purchased an antique hand made mirror and stripped three layers of paint and stain off (redid in a natural stain)...

...painted and stained a bookshelf and a two drawer table that goes in the living room, frosted three tall windows for privacy in my entryway...

...started jogging at least twice a week, going to yoga at the beach at 8am every Wednesday and Saturday morning...

...started surfing behind our boat (instead of just holding the flag) and continuing to skate with my derby team (did I mention I was given MVP at our bout this weekend?).

It has been nice to have been away, seems I didn't miss much. I have kept up with my writing via (get this) 3 subject college ruled spiral bound paper notebook and pen.

Who would have thought that they still make paper these days (lol, j/k).

Oh, and I started reading again, and it feels great. Loved reading "the Furniture Doctor" (first edition copy) and also this book...

Hope everyone has been living life to the fullest as well, and getting out there and meeting people face to face. I promise to keep in touch a bit more now.

Love to your mother - Muttpuppy

I can't even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed reading this article by Blockodile Dundee. Her guest blog at Derby Girls Blog (which is an awesome site to learn everything derby related) really hits home for any girl skating at any level on any team (not just derby, it applies to any sport, guys too). When learning a new activity or trying to get better at something, giving 100% (always) is the only way to stay at the top of your game, or others will progress while you are left in the dust.

"...Comparing ourselves to others is such a dangerous activity. It allows us to undermine ourselves, devalue our abilities, and become jealous of other people – or on the other end of the spectrum, get a big head and find a false sense of security (for you see, the person trying their hardest to improve will one day overtake you, if you are not doing the same). Comparing ourselves to others clouds our judgement of how much we are actually improving, and is certainly not a fair indicator of how far we’ve come..." Stank Pads

Something smells fresh, and it isn't you standing next to me with your pads on.

Gross! All that built up bacteria? And you want to scratch me up with your Velcro? Hit me with your nastiness? Really girl? CLEAN THEM PADS! It is so easy to do, especially in summer when you have beautiful sanitizing sunshine. Here's how I clean my stank nasty.

  1. Get a bowl (or use your kitchen sink)
  2. Place your pads in water and WHITE VINEGAR (it's cheap, buy lots)
  3. Soak your pads
  4. Place directly outside in the sunshine OR put them all in your dishwasher and wash them without any detergent THEN place them in the sunshine to dry
...I bought a gallon of Lady's Choice Distilled White Vinegar at the Gross Out (aka The Grocery Outlet) for around two bucks and some change...

Been Thinking About Bearings...

I think about bearings often, and how fast they have multiplied around me. The Sonic Cruisers I used this year came with ABEC 1's, which I replaced with Sure Grip ABEC 5's for outdoor use. My Reidell She Devils came with ABEC 9's, which I replaced with Rush Ceramic. I bought a pair of sneaker skates the other day at Play It Again Sports just so I could have the wheels they came with (outdoor use, so no more excuses derby sister(s), I have extra wheels for you to use on the bike paths), and they came with the most unusual bearings I have ever seen, but work really well, SCORE! So, lets see...in the past six months, I have accumulated five sets of bearings, three sets of wheels, three sets of skates, multiple pads, tons of fishnets, two skate helmets, three skate tools....the list can keep going on, but this post isn't about my "inventory" it's actually about bearings, because I've been thinking about them a lot lately. I listen to roller skaters (and skateboarders) to find out what they roll in their wheels, and why. I also ask peeps how often they skate and where, and ask how often they clean their bearings, and with what. I have one friend who only rides swiss ceramics, she has them in both 7mm and 8mm (you can tell if a bearing is 8mm if a pencil fits the center, a 7mm will not). There are some people who exclusively ride one brand of bearing only. I have heard some skaters buy brand new bearings and ride them until it is time to clean them, and instead of cleaning them, sell them to a skater wanting a good deal on newer bearings (then they put that money towards a brand new set, over and over again). It just depends on your personal preference. Any way you slice it, skates need bearings, and bearings need maintenance. How do you clean your bearings? If you are not cleaning yours, you better start, or you will be breaking them prematurely. I will list below my simple bearing cleaning ritual, feel free to tweak it however you like, but just remember, water causes rust, and rust is not good to have in your bearings.

You will need:

  1. safety pin (or eyeglass screw driver) - remove both shields on each bearing
  2. cup or bottle - filled with rubbing alcohol
  3. rubbing Alcohol - soak bearings in after removing the shields
  4. old tooth brush - scrub soaking bearings
  5. paper towel(s) - set cleaned bearings on the towels to air dry
  6. bearing oil (sewing machine oil) - place one or two drops in* clean bearing(s)
  7. dust off the shields and pop them back onto the clean bearings, spin each bearing, add a drop more oil if needed for smooth movement, replace in clean wheels.

Additional Items (to clean wheels):

  1. container - fill with water and dirty wheels
  2. dish Soap - add to container
  3. dish scrubber - scrub the soaking wheels
  4. towel - to dry each wheel before replacing the clean bearings
*it is very important to only apply lubricants to the insides of your bearings, not the outer bearing itself, or it is possible that your axle nuts may unscrew and you can potentially loose one or more wheels while skating.

Example of a what can happen if you don't take care of your bearings. This particular example is from a longboard wheel that almost hurt the rider when it seized up on him.

Super Power

Do I have a super power? A super DERBY power? What is my roller girl identity that all other sister rollers fear? Is it my glitter? My love for mascara? Could it be my charming smile as I can opener the opposing star jammer? I need to focus in on my inner skater and figure it out, because I only have until the 18th of this month to complete my task of finding my inner super hero.

Listed below is the reason I am pondering my super skillz - cause every girl wants the chance to be on a t-shirt, right?
Pivotstar wants YOU to be the subject of our next Skater Hero T Shirt.
Here's how it works:
You email us an action picture of yourself or your friend playing roller derby
AND
A drawing demonstrating your/their super powers (don't worry it doesn't have to be anything fancy - stick men work great!)
Then in true derby democracy, we post them up here for everyone to vote on.
The one with the most votes gets to collaborate with our amazing graphic designer Miss Chica Bomb to create a kick ass Pivotstar T Shirt with your image on it.

Burn

What did I do yesterday? Grabbed up one of my friends and skated to the beach! While at the beach I made yarn pom poms for my friends, then skated home just in time for practice at the park. Today, my legs are tired, I am sore, and my back is fried. Oh well, only two more nights of practice. If only someone were here to slather aloe all over me. Hope everyone is skating their summer away! I HEART SKATING! - Muttpuppy
