Just another Saturday

Superior Mouth Guards! Protech Dent Mouth Guards are the only mouth guard you need to invest in, get one for you and one for your derby wife and sister!

Q. What is more fun than coming home from work to watch Gotham play La Ri-etts at the Doll Factory in LA, California?

A. Being there! (DUH). I bet that everyone that was at the bout had a great time, but for those of us that couldn't be there, Justin.tv gave us live coverage. For those who missed it, or want to catch up on some of the sweet foot work these ladies threw down, you can watch it here on Putting On My Big Girl Panties. Just a word of caution, I try and keep everything "family friendly" (as much as possible), if you are offended by off color humor or colorful language, perhaps you should skip these videos.

Mount

Superior Mouth Guards! Protech Dent Mouth Guards are the only mouth guard you need to invest in, get one for you and one for your derby wife and sister!
I've got one. People always ask me "what's that on your helmet?". It seems a little out of place on a helmet, but it serves a purpose. My boyfriend added it to my helmet (I'll be getting a new helmet anyway). He put it on the back. I kind of look silly, but I really don't care. I have a mount, and no one else does... I can take video while rolling on skates, and when I get my new helmet, someone else can sport the helmet cam helmet and tape me! Though I have yet to try out the camera at practice, I did come across a sweet video that has been edited fantastically! Enjoy the video that I have found for you. Guest Post - She's Putting on Her Big Girl Panties

Today's guest post is by blogger Mutt Puppy, who writes here :) Enjoy!!
Hi everyone, I am Muttpuppy and I have a blog “Putting On My Big Girl Panties” that I write mainly about roller derby, the 1980’s and YouTube videos that perk my interest. Lucy asked if I would do a guest post, so I wrote one. Hope you enjoy!

Midwest, Canada, Niagara Falls, Fort Ticonderoga and Maine (many stops in between). Three siblings of various ages (one of them me), two adult parents, one brown full sized van. It was summer vacation before I went into the seventh grade, two weeks on the road with my two brothers and parents. The trip was full of cheap motels, camping gear, random old friends the parents used to have something in common with, and historical landmarks. Things I will never forget? My “fife” from upstate New York, rain slickers are a must in Niagara, Baxter State Park has moss covered boulders, and my first lobster.

We had made it to Main and were spending the day hiking. My brothers we far ahead, one trying his hardest to ditch the parents, the other on full look out for any bit of fishing water to cast his bobber into. My parents made up the back of the trail, and I was independently exploring the surroundings on my own. Later in life, I found my journal from that trip, the last entry before blank pages, stated solely, ”I love the mountains and want to live in them always”, (which I have done my whole adult life). I am sure I was full of joy and excitement as I leapt through the trees and rocks. I remember hopping up onto one rock, primed to fly like a ballerina through the air to the next, when my foot slipped on some moss covering the rock under my foot, and down my body went into the middle of the large slick natural structure.

My parents rushed up the trail as I screamed in pain, it sounded like I was being murdered. My father had to silence my freak out with a quick slap across my face (the only time he has ever done anything of the sort). Immediately, I was calmer, but I couldn’t walk. My parents took their arms, crossed them in front of them and clasped hands making a cradle, and lifted me into the makeshift arm chair to carry me down to help. It was a slow, bumpy, and not at all pleasant trip to the bottom, but we made it to a cool, crisp body of water with a dock on it. It was there that my father left to get help and come back for my mother and me. I was instructed to go out into the water to help keep the swelling down, so I did what I was told. All of the sudden, my mom was telling me to get out of the cool mountain water, and she looked concerned, but wouldn’t tell me why, until I finally refused unless she told me. Leaches. Swimming up to me, long disgusting leeches. Hurt leg or not, I made it out in record time. Onto the dock, I sat down for a breather. Turning my head, I looked, and there she was, the mother who is supposed to love me, holding a stick, with a leach hanging on the end, in front of my face. More screaming, scooting down the dock, splitters in my butt, and her dangling the leech stick, closer and closer. As she is scarring me for life, here comes my father, a magical sight coming across the lake in a canoe to rescue me from my pain and torture. Mom takes the front, dad the back, me the floor in the middle. I prayed to God that that canoe didn’t tip and I drown. I wondered how much longer until I was back to the camp safe, when over to the right of the canoe, was no more than a moose, eating its lunch of grass in the water. My parents stop to watch. I grow furious because there is land in site and I am in pain! Take me to it? Nope, more moose watching. Gapers.

That day I had an x-ray, with no conclusive results. I was made a half cast of plaster and given bandages to hold it on. After traveling back across half the US with my leg elevated on the seat in front of me, I had a second x-ray, with inconclusive results. The instructions where to sleep with my leg free of the cast, elevated, until the third set of x-rays from a specialists. Ok. I did that. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and the house phone rang, awaking me from a beautiful sleep. No one picked it up the phone. It kept ringing, and no one got it, so I leapt like a ballerina out of my bed, landing perfectly, onto my hurt foot. Blackness. I passed out in pain. That day, I had the third set of x-rays. That day, I was given a full walking cast. That day, I found out I would never grow anymore. That was the day, my dreams of being taller than my mother, were shot down. I would never be 5’5” like I had always wanted; I would be 5’2”, forever. I also learned something else that day. When children grow, their growth plates are open. As the growth slows, the growth plates fuse together. In the legs the hips fuse first, the ankles last. Apparently, I had broken my growth plate in my ankle, so it was “open”, a confusing thing for a doctor to look at and see on a girl going into the seventh grade, who’s growth plate should technically not be fused together yet (hence, no more growth). The news of my lack of future height crushed me. I looked up to my doctor that day, with tears, asking him if there was anything I could do, or for him to tell me he had made a mistake. The Doctor told me that he could break my legs, insert rods, and then I would be taller, but in a wheel chair until I healed. Sign me up! I was ready; he could have taken me back and done it right then and there. My mother told me he was only joking (but he wasn’t). We still fight about it to this day. I have spent every day since then, wishing I could have had more leg, less torso. Just three more inches. It wasn’t until just recently that I learned something new. I have an advantage in the sport of roller derby because of my lower center of gravity, and someday, I will learn how to harness it. I have only been skating with my derby team for a few months, but that is all the time it has taken for me to come to terms with years of feeling inadequate with my size.

Fluff

Work outs just went up a notch.

Running on the treadmill yesterday, my goal was 2 minute sprints, 2 minutes walking, repeated for an hour. At 32 minutes, I moved onto weights. Perhaps I need to work myself into the full hour. Today, I did the stationary bike. Hope all my efforts start to show some results soon...
I shoveled snow two days in a row. I'm not talking an inch of white fluffy snow, no no no. How about a foot of wet and heavy Sierra Cement both at night and in the morning. I think there is another week of snow coming, so I better start stretching the arms out now!
Is anyone else getting just hammered with snow right now? It is great for skiing and snowboarding here where I am. Out resorts and tourism needed snow to get some more people up. Hope that this weekend will be busy for all the restaurants!

MJ

I have decided that this is on my list of "to do's" for this year. Since the man who taught Michael Jackson how to "back slide" aka, "moonwalk" teaches dance here in my town, then learning it on skates is a must! Check out Kimberly Cole as she rolls her way to the moon!

Did you enjoy this video? Tell me! yes/no!

Carpet FIber

Who blogs about carpet fiber?

As those who have been following along here on Putting On My Big Girl Panties, you know that I finally got my go fast derby skates (Riedell She Devils, Radar Wheels). What you might not know, is that I lace them up on average, of every single day. I enjoy doing many leg strengthening exercises while wearing them (for additional weight and also to "become one with the skate") while watching television and performing general house chores. My concern? Carpet fibers, since the whole house is covered in rust colored carpet. I am noticing that my skates are becoming very sluggish while at derby practice, so, I will be attempting to perform my very first knock down, drag out, wheel inspection and cleaning adventure in the near future. I can only imagine how many fibers have made their way into my bearings (not to mention the dust and cat hair). I am past due on rotating my wheels anyway, so it just makes sense to do it all at once. My very first scrimmage is at the end of this month, so I need to get it done and get some speed a.s.a.p. While at derby clinic, I watched a short cleaning 101 session, so I feel as though I understand what bits and pieces I need to have on hand, but doing it myself for the first time might be interesting. Wish me luck! If you have any ticks or secrets, please leave a comment on this post.

TIP OF THE DAY - HOW TO KEEP YOUR BOOT LEATHER STRONG (NO DUCT TAPE REQUIRED).
For those ladies out there who wonder what color of duct tape to put on the toes of your skates, and all the gals wondering "should I get a toe cup or toe strap", here is a helpful piece of information. Wear and tear of boots develops when there is friction (boot leather/floor). To prevent this, there needs to be a barrier between the leather and the floor. Grab an old rag, a tin of black Kiwi shoe polish and a buffing brush. By applying a layer of polish on the boot and brushing it to a shine, you have now added a barrier that not only protects from friction (floor/polish, no longer floor/leather) but also makes your skates shine. For ladies with white skates, you will need white polish followed by clear. Ladies with black skates and white stripes, put a layer of petrolatum jelly on the white areas before using the black polish. A quick wipe to remove the petroleum jelly, and you are now primed to apply the white to the stripes (tip - use a cotton swab).

Below is a video by a boy who shows how he takes wheels off his skates and pops out bearings to change into new wheels.
Works for skateboards too!

Q/n/A

Driving in the dark Friday night, my teammate and myself were looking for a warehouse in back of a mattress factory.
The rest of our teammates had just arrived, and we had fifteen minutes until our introduction(s) and question session was to start. We found our destination and parked. Upon arrival, we realized that it was going to be much colder than anticipated inside, especially since we were going to be sitting on concrete flooring in an unheated building. As soon as I saw a coffee pot with warm dark deliciousness, I headed strait for it, and poured myself a steaming cup. Finding a spot on the ground, I pulled out my pen and scrap paper to make sure and write down any tidbits of information our coach for the weekend was telling us. A brief bio of our weekend coach - he has coached a team to third place national standing, has worked with some of the top derby teams in the USA, and is currently head coach for team Canada (World Cup Roller Derby, December 2011, Toronto).

Q. At practice, our team does great in drills, but falls apart in bouts
A. "Find Like". Find your color - asses who is better inside/outside. Play to your skill level. Train to area/space. Just saying
"Play Together" is like saying "Jammer Go Fast, Turn Left". You need to have a leader, like in the military. If you lose your commander, everything goes to hell. Train people to communicate!

Q. What differences in derby do you see East/West coast?
A. Doesn't really matter what coast, in the end, who wins the tournaments? Ask yourself that. It's because who you have on your team. Learn to adapt and change. If you can evolve, you can win.

Q. Has to do with the Derby Dolls starting on line (flat track).
A. LA - 3 Dolls/color on line protect the line (like a picket line). Jammers have five seconds to push off. Get solid (four points of contact on the line to start) so you can't get pushed over. ALL WHEELS ON THE GROUND.

Q. Sprinting off the line, everyone wants to control the line in front when the whistle blows.
A. At nationals this year, all the girls took a knee, so sprinting doesn't matter. Look for the gray area of WFTDA rules. If you are being moved, you can go backwards at the start. Remember to evolve.

Q. Can a coach be a referee too?
A. Only if the referee proves to be unbiased, or it would be unfair. What ever comes best for the league first. If your league fails, everything falls apart. There are many emotions in derby, it takes over lives (without a 12 step program).

Q. Advice for new teams starting out (Bi laws, thinking like a business, etc.)
A. Trademark your stuff. Get your focus, like where do you want to go? Are you here to rule the world? Have fun? Make friends? It hurts to take "ass kickers" to "ass kissers". Make sure that you have your bi laws and everyone knows them. Bi laws keep everything honest and healthy. Need to have a chain of command. Everyone from Hells Angels to the Masons have rules. Make sure that everyone paying dues, has a say.

Q. Anything else?
A. Can't be too picky. There are two types

  • 1) Derby Skaters - show up to photo shoots, pay their dues, etc.
  • 2) Girls that play derby - play anytime, anywhere, anyhow. It's PUT UP OR SHUT UP.

Weekend

Oh my goodness! I survived my first roller derby clinic! Sore? Yes! The floor was sport court, something I have never skated on before, so I fell, a lot. There were girls of all skill levels in attendance. Eight newer girls from my team attended the Friday, Saturday and Sunday festivities. We didn't stay for the scrimmage on Sunday, but did hear that a girl broke her ankle in three places and had to go in for surgery. Wishing her a fast recovery. I will post some of the Q and A from the Friday night portion of the clinic a bit later. All in all, I feel like I know more what I need to work on, and what fears I have about derby in general.

Until later, Happy Blogging and Happy Skating! - Muttpuppy

I am going to get a pair of gumball toe stops - anyone tried these big natural rubber beasts?
