7/7/11 - Sentencing for Casey Anthony, Judge Perry presiding.
She will not go free today, probably later this month or August. She was given one year for each of the four counts which is the maximum for each count (and consecutive). Later today, the exact date for her release will be known.

This just in........the release date for prisoner Casey Anthony will be WEDNESDAY JULY 13th, 2011 (credit for 1,043 days served, ‎1043 days calculates to 2.86 year).

The two evils of derby

...Football....How many backs have the name "Johnson" written on them?

If my last name where Johnson, and so was an opponent on the other team, would it matter? No, it would not because it actually happens quite often. What about in roller derby? Have you ever seen two girls with the same name (or something similar)? Probably not, due to the fact that there is a registry for roller derby girls that approves or denies names based upon similarity to a name or names that have been previously registered.

I have a derby name, and it was hard to decide on it because every time I came up with a name I felt comfortable with, I would check the registry and see that someone already had that name, so I would start again trying to find a special name that fit me. I like having a derby name and introducing myself with an extended hand in a hearty shake while smiling these words from my mouth "Hi, I am...", BUT, I also agree with Engel, blogger for Sprechen Sie Derby.

Tape Measure Tuesdays

When I start a new workout plan, I like to take measurements of my body to see how my body is improving from all the torture. Having a buddy to take your measurements is a great idea (as is having a buddy to workout with). Just pick one day of the week, any day (mine is always Tuesday), measure, wait a week, repeat the process. I tend to have the best results from working out when I do so with a friend who is competitive, motivated, and smaller than me. It also helps me to have a goal as well. Setting a "weight" goal is hard for me to obtain, since my body is extremely muscular. I have a pair of size 4 jeans that I have only fit into two times in my life, once when I had Cassandra as my personal trainer, and once when my girlfriend KT and I worked out every day while her husband was working (before I went to work bar tending in the evening). It worked great and I came within three pounds of my target weight. I am going to pull out those jeans tonight and hang them in the bathroom next to where I get ready. If I stare at those pants every single day, I will meet my goal.

Oh! And for those who were wondering, WE WON OUR FIRST HOME BOUT OF THE SEASON! Woot Woot! I am so proud of everyone who skated, because we did what our coach has been yelling at us all season. People kept coming up saying how we played so well together. It made me extremely proud to be on the team that I am. I look forward to our next bout (away, B team) and possible win. My favorite thing about derby? Is playing derby! Good luck to each and every team as you continue this season. Set your dramas aside and play hard with your team, fair with your opponents, and remember to thank your FANS for all their support (and $).

Die In A Fire

It takes a patient person to keep a blog going that actually has people besides your best friend reading it. Comments and likes flow freely on my personal facebook, yet here on blogger, I seem to be failing. It doesn't matter how many questions I ask at the bottom of my blog post, I am constantly begging peeps to post anything in the comments. Due to my lack of blogging skills, I have decided to hunt down the worst roller derby blog(s) and post them here at Putting On My Big Girl Panties. If anyone has come across any horridly awful blogs centered around roller derby that are so horrible that you can't stop reading it, let me know because there have got to be more blogs like mine out there (for those of you just joining, I blog as Muttpuppy, and I enjoy run on sentences, obscure videos, and the 1980's). I have been so preoccupied with derby lately, I haven't paid much attention to anything else. Another two bouts this month (one home, one away). I am still rubbing Arnica gel on my battle wounds from the two bouts last month (but I LOVE IT!).

Does anyone else have an analogy that they would like to share, describing how they feel about derby and it's similarities to something? Please share your thoughts.

Apparently, derby girls like to show off their bruises, so I will post mine for all to see. The colors have since mostly gone away, but I am left with this huge mass and ripply stuff in my leg. I am not super stoked, because I still have a huge lump right below this injury that has been in my leg since I was a sophomore in high school (obtained from a car accident involving myself, no seat belt, a freshly grated dirt road, a small tree, and a Ford Festiva driven by my girlfriend).

Does This Tutu Make My Butt Look Big?

While researching how to become a better derby player I came across the visual block. In derby, new skaters learn about positional blocking (getting in front of someone) and blocking by making contact with our bodies. Some skaters work on their mental blocking (messing with the opposing skaters head). The visual block is different. Visual blocking is appearing large on the skate court. It is easy for girls who are large to achieve a visual block. For smaller skaters (smaller teams) having an appearance of being larger can help block a skater from entering past your hips. It seems that more and more derby teams have adopted booty shorts and derby skinz as the appropriate bottom uniform for bouting, but are we by wearing less actually causing more penetration through our blockers? Would not a full skirt or tutu actually make the opposing team players perceive that there is less room for them to skate through, therefore attempting less passes and scoring points? My team has won one, lost two. This weekend I will be playing in a bout with our B team. I have made three tutus and asked those that have tutus to bring them. Our team is small, but the other team might not be. The other team might have large ladies swaying in their skates, back and forth in front of me, just holding me back with their enormous rear ends. If that is the case, I will play their game. I will put on that tutu and wear it proud, asking the other ladies on my team to do the same. Starting off small and then getting "big" will not only be a visual block, but a mental block as well. Once they are confused, we will go and knock the crap out of them, while helping our jammer get threw the pack and score us some points. I really look forward to this weekends bout, and I wish all my girlie's the best of luck! Now let's go sport some bunched up tulle!

Getting Ready For A Derby Bout

Congratulations to the Mendo Mayhem ladies on their win. Both teams did great! Wishing a speedy recovery to Fiona Fearless and Kylanator. Looking forward to bouting Merced next weekend. It is looking like Mother Nature is not on our side this week for practices. As those of you do or don't know, my team practices outside on a cement track. Due to SNOW in May, practices this week will most likely be canceled. There are no alternate practice facilities, so it will be drills and skills and rules for our girls (85% of this teams roster are ladies who will be bouting for the first time).

Today we celebrate the life of Bob Marley

When I was younger, I lived with Jenny in a small two bedroom apartment. Jenny and I would listen to Burning Spear and Luda, eat greens topped with liquid amino's and nutritional yeast, run around bare foot playing in the forests and beaches, enjoyed a summer of "why not's?" dressed as mushroom goddesses. Jenny and I enjoyed our early twenties, that is for sure. As you age, you tend to hold onto those sweet memories, because as the years role forward, summers of "why not?" become maybe a day once every few years. As life becomes more structured and less free flowing, memories are sometime all you have. The other day, I went to my small tattered bookshelf (that actually used to be Jenny's when we lived together) and decided I was going to read a book, an actual tangible, word on paper with page numbers, book. I picked up "Rasta Heart" A Journey Into One Love By Robert and Julia Roshind. When I opened up the book, I found two inscriptions inside.

This book was not mine, it was Jenny's, and it was signed by both authors. I contacted Jenny to tell her I had the book and I would send it to her so she could have it back. Her response was different than I expected. She told me she was happy that I had found it and picked it to read, that I should keep it and learn from it. I love that girl. She is always giving of herself, spreading the peaceful messages threw her words and her actions. Jenny will be the first to tell you she's not perfect, but she wants to be so badly. She is a prime example of one love. I am proud to have her as a friend. Thank you for sharing your book with me.

When I try this at home, I feel like I am going to puke, just like when I was a kid.

I loved the sit and spin so much, I would twirl for hours on it in our Michigan basement. As I age, I remember more and more wonderful things about my youth. I think about all the games and activities that my brothers and I used to do, like tag outside at dusk, and pogo sticks in the drive way.

I used to roller skate at the rink on the weekends religiously, play t-ball and ride bikes. I wasn't ever the skinniest girl in my school, but I was fit and healthy. My brothers and I kept active playing PIG and HORSE in the front yard, and I liked to hula hoop in the wet grass in our yard. We chased our dog around and played football in the back. My brothers and I built forts behind our barns and went hiking through the trees. We were not thin, but we were strong. In my life currently, I am trying to lose fat, build muscle and add flexibility to achieve a body that I feel better in, through what I am calling "recess". Every day, I get to have recess just like when I was a kid. Like when my mom used to tell me to "go outside and blow the stink off of you". Everyday. At least a 1/2 hour. I want my recess to involve as many people as want to play, utilizing fun things that we did as kids, like skating and hula hooping, or tag played in the sand. I have been doing some online research on hula hooping and am blown away that I haven't added this into my exercise routine before this!

We be skating in the streets!

Been busy skating it up outside
on the roads and bike paths.

Skating is my most favorite thing to do, especially with my team mates.There hasn't been a shortage of skating partners in my life recently.
On the trails, paths or streets,peeps be rallying at any chance to roll.

Charging uphill with a ten pound weight vest is easy
when you keep in mind that bathing suit season is upon us
(along with BOUTING SEASON)!

The bike paths provide lots of space to practice drills and endurance.

The doggies love to come with too!




When our four legged friends get tired, they get carried
(cardio + weights = conditioning).

Soaking the feet and caring for some pretty gnarly blisters
underfoot is a small price to pay at the end of the day for how great my body is feeling.

My week in a nutshell (help! I'm trapped in a nutshell)

1. WED - Skated hard in the streets
2. THUR - Skated hard in the streets
3. FRI - Practice with the team
4. SAT - Skated hard in the streets
5. SUN - Practice with the team
6. MON - Skated hard in the streets
7. TUE - Skated hard in the streets
8. WED - Practice with the team

Let's see. Sunday night I washed my pads. Monday morning, my man bought me new ceramic bearings. Monday afternoon, I posted on facebook "something wonderful is afoot, I can feel it!" Monday night I polished my skates, washed and rotated my wheels and put in my sick new bearings (thanks hun). Tuesday morning at work, I miss a call. I text back - asking coach "you rang?". Coach calls back, with the news. I AM BOUTING CHICO THIS SATURDAY!!!!!!! Top 14 players for this bout has my name on it! I am beyond excited. I think I will get nervous, but for now, I am just so excited to go hit some ladies I can't even tell you how much. I never would have come this far so fast if it hadn't been for all the great ladies that I skate with, my captain and co-captain, my coach, and of course, me! Derby practice is such a great outlet, now lets see if bouting is too! Wish me luck on Saturday!
